Every Stage Matters: Acupuncture from Preconception to Postpartum

One of the questions I get asked most often is:

“Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?”

The answer is yes. When performed by a licensed acupuncturist trained in prenatal care, acupuncture is considered safe throughout pregnancy and can be an incredible way to support both you and your growing baby.

Pregnancy asks so much of your body. Even when everything is progressing normally, it’s common to experience nausea, fatigue, aches and pains, poor sleep, heartburn, swelling, anxiety, or simply the feeling that your body is changing faster than you can keep up. Acupuncture offers a gentle, natural way to help manage many of these symptoms while giving you dedicated time to slow down, rest, and reconnect with yourself.

Acupuncture During the Preconception Period

Whether you’re trying to conceive or preparing for IUI or IVF, acupuncture can be a supportive part of your fertility journey. Ideally, I recommend starting treatment about three months before trying to conceive, as that’s roughly the length of time it takes for an egg to mature. That said, it’s never too late to start. Whether you’re planning ahead or have already begun trying to conceive, acupuncture can still offer meaningful support. Treatments are designed to support your body’s natural reproductive processes by promoting healthy blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, helping regulate hormones, supporting ovulation, and reducing stress

The First Trimester

The first trimester is an exciting time, but it can also bring some of the biggest physical and emotional changes of pregnancy. Morning sickness, food aversions, fatigue, headaches, and anxiety are all common as your body adjusts to supporting new life. Acupuncture can help ease many of these symptoms while providing support during the early weeks of pregnancy. Every treatment is tailored to where you are in your pregnancy and what you’re experiencing that day. For many patients, their appointment becomes more than symptom relief, it’s an opportunity to slow down, rest, and spend some time connecting with your baby.

The Second and Third Trimester

As your baby grows, your body continues to adapt.

Acupuncture can help relieve many of the physical discomforts that often appear later in pregnancy, including:

  • Low back pain
  • Hip or pelvic pain
  • Sciatica
  • Carpal tunnel symptoms
  • Heartburn
  • Swelling
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Stress and anxiety

Many patients also notice they leave feeling calmer, more rested, and better able to handle the physical and emotional demands of pregnancy.

Breech Presentation

Around the third trimester, one specific concern that sometimes comes up is breech presentation.

There is a traditional acupuncture technique called moxibustion that is sometimes used in this situation, typically around 32–36 weeks. It involves warming a specific acupuncture point on the body with a dried herb called mugwort. The goal is to create optimal conditions for the baby to move into a head-down position on their own.

Research on moxibustion for breech presentation has shown promising results, and it is considered safe when done appropriately and at the right stage of pregnancy. It’s important to remember that babies often turn on their own, and not every breech presentation requires intervention.

When used, this approach is always supportive rather than forceful, focused on encouraging balance, relaxation, and giving the body the best possible environment for change.

Preparing for Labor

Treatments after 37 weeks support your body as it prepares for birth by supporting cervical ripening, encouraging normal uterine function, promoting relaxation through the nervous system, and building the Qi and energetic reserves needed for labor and delivery.

Postpartum Healing Matters Too!

Your care shouldn’t end once your baby arrives.

The postpartum period (the fourth trimester) is a time of significant physical recovery and emotional adjustment. Whether you had a vaginal or Cesarean birth, a home or hospital birth, your body has done something extraordinary.

Acupuncture can support postpartum recovery by helping reduce pain, promote healing, restore energy (Qi), improve sleep, and support emotional well-being during this transition. It can also be a supportive part of a comprehensive care plan for postpartum anxiety or depression, alongside your healthcare team.

During pregnancy, so much attention is focused on caring for your baby. Postpartum acupuncture is an opportunity to care for you, too.

Is Pregnancy Acupuncture Right for You?

Every pregnancy is different, which is why every treatment is personalized. Whether you’re hoping to conceive, navigating the ups and downs of pregnancy, preparing for labor, or recovering after birth, acupuncture can be a safe, supportive addition to your prenatal care.

If you have questions about whether acupuncture is right for you, I’d be happy to talk through your goals and create a treatment plan that meets you where you are.
