Pregnancy is often filled with decisions—where you’ll give birth, who will provide your care, what classes to take, and how to prepare for life with a newborn. While it’s natural to spend time creating a birth plan, one of the most valuable things you can do is build your support team before your baby arrives.
The saying “It takes a village” exists for a reason. Birth is just one day, but pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and early parenting are a journey. Having trusted professionals and a supportive community can make all the difference in helping you feel informed, confident, and cared for.
Start with Your Primary Care Provider
Your pregnancy care provider is often the foundation of your birth team. Whether you choose a community midwife, hospital-based midwife, or obstetrician, it’s important to find someone whose philosophy, communication style, and approach to care align with your goals.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. You deserve a provider who takes the time to listen, explains your options, and supports you in making informed decisions throughout your pregnancy.
Consider Additional Birth Support
Many families also choose to work with a birth doula. Doulas provide continuous emotional, physical, and informational support during labor and birth. They work alongside your medical provider and can be a valuable source of reassurance, comfort measures, and advocacy throughout your experience.
For families planning a home birth, hospital birth, or birth center birth, doula support can be a wonderful addition to your care team.
Plan for the Postpartum Period
While birth often gets most of the attention, the weeks after your baby arrives are a time of significant adjustment. Postpartum doulas provide practical, emotional, and educational support during this transition. They can assist with newborn care, infant feeding, recovery, meal preparation, light household tasks, sibling adjustment, prioritizing sleep and helping families build confidence as they settle into life with a new baby. Whether you need support for a few days or several weeks, a postpartum doula can be an invaluable part of your village.
Also consider who will help with meals, household tasks, emotional support, and newborn care. Many families benefit from not only working with a postpartum doula but with lactation consultants, pelvic floor physical therapists and mental health professionals during this transition.
Planning ahead allows you to focus on healing, feeding your baby, and adjusting to your growing family.
Take Advantage of Local Resources
One of the greatest strengths of our community is the incredible network of professionals dedicated to supporting families. Childbirth education classes, infant feeding support, parenting groups, prenatal fitness, and community events all provide opportunities to learn, ask questions, and connect with others walking a similar path.
Building relationships before your baby arrives often makes it easier to know where to turn when questions come up later.
Your Village Should Reflect Your Needs
Every family’s journey is different. Some people prefer a small support system, while others enjoy building a larger network of trusted professionals and community resources. There is no one “right” way to create your village.
The most important thing is surrounding yourself with people who respect your values, provide reliable information, and help you feel supported throughout pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and early parenthood.
